Step 9: Installing the Bulkheads
Now that the inside had been fiberglassed the next step was to install the bulkheads. The bulkheads are pieces of plywood cut to the shape of the cross-section of the kayak. There are two of them (a forward and an aft) and they separate the cockpit area from the forward and aft storage/floatation compartments. The first step was to wire them in place with two wires on each side:
Then I filleted around the perimeter on both sides of both bulkheads:
Lastly, I coated the exposed wood with unthickened epoxy and also put a second coat on the fiberglass in the cockpit area:
